Abstract: The LITO is an ice tethered / floating spar buoy and sub-surface chain that takes continuous hourly measurements of visible light at discrete depths, and transfer the data via the Iridium satellite network.
Twelve nodes are located along a power and communication cable that hangs vertically from the underside of the buoy. The nodes hang at nominal depths of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 14, 21, 32, and 50m. Each node has 6 light sensors, three detecting downwelling light and three upwelling light. Two of each set of three sensor sets have optical filters: one 'orange' and one 'blue', the third is unfiltered 'white'.
The LITO was deployed in level ice by the Sea Ice Ridge Observatory in the MOSAiC Central Observatory. It was the 2nd of 3 units of the same type deployed during the MOSAiC expedition. Its drift started at N 88.0312885, E 80.2587416, on 14th Feb 2020 and last data transmission was on the 2nd July 2020. The unit sent data until late summer 2020 when internal battery failure caused it to stop transmitting. Intended recovery was not possible before positional data were lost.
2020E1 is referred to with the following names, all indicate the exact same instrument: environmental pope, envipope, light ice tethered observatory (LITO), envipope 2, or envipope E.
This instrument was deployed as part of the project Ridges - Safe HAVens for ice-associated Flora and Fauna in a Seasonally ice-covered Arctic OCean (HAVOC), funded by the Research Council of Norway, project number: 280292 and Arctic Ocean ecosystems - Applied technology, Biological interactions and Consequences in an era of abrupt climate change (Arctic ABC Development, Research Council of Norway, project number: 245923).
