Abstract:
Zooplankton taxonomy & abundance data sampled by Multinet and WP2 (200 micron & 64 micron mesh) and swim net (200 micron). The data is presented as abundance (ind/m3) for all identified mesozooplankton taxa.
Quality
SAMPLING: Multinet & WP2 net (200 micron & 64 micron): Mesozooplankton was samples with Hydrobios MultiNet equipped with 5 nets sampling distinct depth layers from bottom to surface. Samples were taken from 5 distinct depth layers from bottom to surface. Samples were taken with 2 sets of nets, 200 micron mand 64 micron. In March samples was taken with a WP2 net instead since it was not possible to maintain an opening next to the ship for deployment of the MultinNet. 4 distinct depth layers were sampled with the WP2
Swim-net: Swim-net samples were sampled by divers using a hand net with an opening of 0.25m*0.25m=0.0625m2, 200 micron mesh. The divers swam a distance of 80m at three depths, 0m, 1m & 5m
ANALYSES: The samples were preserved in 4% borax-buffered formaldehyde immediately after collection. The organisms were identified and counted under a stereomicroscope equipped with an ocular micrometer, according to standard procedures (e.g. Harris et al. 2000). Small-sized zooplankters were identified and counted in sub-samples obtained from the fixed sample volume by automatic pipette (approximately 500 individuals). Large zooplankters were sorted out and identified from the whole sample. Representatives of Calanus spp. were identified to species level based on morphology and prosome lengths of individual copepodid stages (Kwasniewski et al. 2003).
